My dad, Brian Lackey, is my biggest inspiration and hero. He is an incredible musician who has been playing for over 40 years. He first got me on a stage at 7 years old to sing a song in front of my entire elementary school. We sang “inch by inch”, a song about gardening. People still tease me about it to this day.
The second I was on stage I was bitten by the performance bug. It’s all I ever wanted to do. I played open mics, talent shows and eventually found my calling, magic. My dad and I jammed at open mic nights, and he’d even let me come sing a song with him and his band on nights they were playing in the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion.
But my favourite place to jam was our basement. My mom would come down and play piano, my dad and I on guitar and vocals and we would play for hours. My mom is my angel and my rock, and always there for me after a show to ask how it went and even though she supports me to the fullest in following my passion, every so often she’ll still bring up going back to school. Sorry mom, I’m doing card tricks for the rest of my life!
When I finally started performing shows, my dad would come and open for me. We had the whole town of Jasper watching and cheering for us when we took the stage at the Community Hall. When I moved to Kelowna and started performing full time, my dad joined me once again to open for me at hotels, wineries and our two biggest shows- The Creekside Theatre and the Vernon and District of Performing Arts. He drove 8 hours to play 20 minutes for me to open my show, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Mom and Dad, you’re one of the biggest reasons I get to do what I love. You’ve never once stopped believing in me. You’ve always been there after my shows with words of wisdom and an “ATTA BOY BUD!”
I love you both to the moon and back and I can’t wait to show you how far I can go with magic, and both of you behind me. I am now an unstoppable freight train of entertainment that will never slow down, as long as I know you have my back.
